Accessibility
This site is meant to be usable by everyone, whatever device, browser or assistive technology they use. It aims to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA.
What the site does
- A “Skip to content” link is the first thing on every page, for keyboard and screen reader users.
- Every photograph has a text description, and every diagram has a title and a description that a screen reader can read.
- Colour is never the only sign of anything. Where the bomb's ochre and the plane's blue mark a journey, the words say which too.
- Pages follow your device's light or dark setting, and the button at the top of each page switches between them.
- Text can be enlarged to twice its size, and pages work at widths down to 360 pixels. Wide tables scroll sideways on their own, without moving the page.
- Movement is kept to a minimum, and turned off if your device asks for reduced motion.
- Every page can be read without JavaScript. Without it the light and dark button and the filters are hidden, search cannot run, and a footnote number takes you to the folded list of sources rather than opening it.
How it is checked
Before a page is published it is checked with axe, an automated accessibility checker, in both light and dark and at phone and desktop widths, and with Lighthouse. The build itself refuses a page with an image that has no description or a diagram without a title.
Automated checks find many problems but not all of them. If something gets in your way, please say so.
What is not yet as good as it should be
- Many photographs are scans of prints from 1945, and some are dark or soft. Their descriptions say what they show.
- Most pages link to their sources: museums, archives and government sites. Those sites are not run from here, and some of their documents are scanned PDFs that a screen reader cannot read.
