Privacy

This site collects nothing that identifies you. There is no sign up, no account, no form that sends anything, and no way to tell one visitor from another.

No cookies and no tracking

No cookies are set. There is no tag manager, no pixel, no advertising and nothing that follows you from one site to another.

What your browser keeps

Two small settings, and only if you choose them. The Light and Dark button at the top of each page writes your choice under the name tinian-theme. The button below writes tinian-no-stats if you turn off counting.

Neither is a cookie, neither is ever sent anywhere, and nobody here can read them. Clearing your browser's data for this site removes them.

Searching

Search runs in your browser. What you type is not sent to this site or to anyone else: your browser fetches parts of the site's search index, as it would any other file, and finds the matches itself. Your words appear only in the page's own address, so that a search can be bookmarked or shared.

Counting pages

Pages are counted, so that it is possible to tell which pages are being read. The counting is done by Cloudflare Web Analytics, a small script each page loads from Cloudflare.

It records that a page was viewed, how quickly it loaded, your type of browser and device, your country, and where the visit came from, such as a search engine or a link on another site.

Cloudflare states that Web Analytics does not use cookies or local storage to track visitors, does not fingerprint them by IP address or browser, and does not collect visitors' personal data. Cloudflare explains how it works.

If you would rather not be counted, switch on Global Privacy Control or Do Not Track in your browser, or press the button below. Either way the page loads nothing from Cloudflare's analytics.

That script is the one thing a page loads from anywhere else. Every page is served with a security policy that stops the browser loading anything else from elsewhere.

Serving the page

The site runs on Cloudflare, which delivers it to you. Your request has to reach a server to be answered, and Cloudflare processes it for that purpose and to keep the service running and secure, under its own terms. This site adds no logging of its own, keeps no record of who asked for what, and stores nothing about visitors.

Most pages link to their sources: museums, archives, government records, Wikimedia Commons and others. Following a link takes you to somebody else's site, with its own privacy policy and possibly its own cookies.

Why, and for how long

Counting pages and answering emails both rely on legitimate interests: knowing whether the site is read, and replying to people who write. Neither is used for anything else.

Emails are kept only as long as it takes to deal with them, and deleted within a year.

Cloudflare and Microsoft may handle data outside the UK, including in the United States, under the safeguards UK law requires.

Your rights

Data protection law gives you rights over personal data held about you, including the right to see it and the right to have it deleted. Apart from any email you send, no personal data is held here, so there is nothing to show you and nothing to delete.

If you are unhappy with how your data has been handled, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.

Asking about any of this

tinian1945.com is run by Julian Mullins, who is responsible for it. Questions about this page go to hello@tinian1945.com.

An email carries your address and whatever you put in it. Cloudflare passes messages sent to that address on to Julian's own mailbox, which is held by Microsoft 365. They are used only to answer you, and are not added to anything or shared with anybody.
